Little girl making funny face while brushing teeth

At Crabtree Pediatric Dentistry, extracting a tooth is always a last resort. However, there are times it may be our only viable option. Dr. Kristen and her team will do everything possible to ensure your child's experience is positive and comfortable. You can always count on us for exceptional, gentle care!

Why Would Your Child Need a Tooth Extracted?

Dental extractions are often necessary due to extensive tooth decay, a severe tooth infection or abscess, or teeth damaged beyond repair due to trauma. We may also need to extract a baby tooth blocking a permanent tooth that's ready to come in.

In some cases, extracting one or more teeth is a necessary component of your little one’s orthodontic treatment. In coordination with your orthodontist, we may perform selective tooth extractions to make room for the remaining teeth to shift into alignment.

What Happens During a Tooth Extraction?

We will first numb the area with a local anesthetic and administer nitrous oxide, if needed, to ensure your child is comfortable and relaxed. Pediatric tooth extractions are typically simple, involving the removal of accessible teeth with forceps. Most children experience minimal to no pain after the procedure and can resume their normal activities shortly after.

What Is a Space Maintainer?

If your child has a baby tooth pulled before the permanent replacement is ready to come in, Dr. Kristen may recommend placing a custom-fit orthodontic device known as a space maintainer. That will help maintain the space needed for the proper growth of the incoming adult teeth and will help guide them into the correct alignment. Moreover, the space maintainer will prevent the neighboring teeth from moving into the gap, reducing the need for major orthodontic treatments down the road.

Preventing the Need for Dental Extractions

The best way to prevent damage to your child's teeth is to maintain proper oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing and flossing. Even babies and toddlers need their teeth cleaned! If your child is involved in sports, a custom mouthguard can help prevent damage to the teeth. Don't forget to visit Crabtree Pediatric Dentistry for your little one's twice-a-year dental exams and cleanings to allow us to detect dental problems early on when they're easiest to treat.
