Dental Exams & Cleanings
Proudly serving Rogers and Northwest Arkansas
Scheduling your child's periodic dental exams and cleanings is an integral component of preventive dentistry designed to halt the development or advancement of dental disease. At Crabtree Pediatric Dentistry, our team is committed to instilling positive oral care habits right from the start to set the stage for a lifetime of healthy smiles!
How Often Should You Schedule Your Child's Dental Exams and Cleanings?
According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), you should first visit your child's dentist within six months of the first tooth's arrival and no later than age one. From that point on, most children require twice-a-year dental visits to maintain their oral health. If, however, a child is prone to developing tooth decay, cavities, or gum disease, Dr. Kristen may recommend more frequent care.
Why Are Routine Dental Exams and Cleanings Necessary?
Professional dental exams allow us to identify and treat oral health problems as they develop, preventing them from progressing and requiring extensive procedures down the road. Dental cleanings are just as important because they remove plaque and tartar deposits, leaving those pearly whites clean and healthy, and lowering the risk of tooth decay and cavities. Keeping up with your child's periodic dental visits is one of the best ways to safeguard your little one's smile and keep dental disease at bay.
What Happens During Your Child's Dental Exam and Cleaning?
During a comprehensive pediatric dental exam, we'll take digital x-rays of the mouth, usually starting around age four. At Crabtree Pediatric Dentistry, we utilize modern x-ray equipment with 80 to 90 percent less radiation than the already minimal radiation exposure of traditional x-ray equipment. Digital radiography reveals things we cannot see during physical exams, providing a valuable diagnostic tool.
Dr. Kristen will also conduct a physical examination to evaluate every aspect of your child's oral health. She will recommend any preventive or restorative treatments needed to maintain a healthy, happy smile.
Next is the dental cleaning. We'll remove any plaque or tartar deposits as your little one relaxes and enjoys a movie. We may recommend an in-office fluoride treatment, if necessary, to strengthen your child's tooth enamel and lower the risk of tooth decay and cavities. Our team will also demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques to encourage proper oral hygiene practices at home.
